- Europe-wide survey by radio.de shows the importance of Valentine’s Day: Valentine’s Day means nothing to only just over 5 percent of listeners
- In France, couples in love are planning candlelight dinners; in Spain, love songs matter most
Hamburg, 10 February 2016. On the occasion of the upcoming Valentine’s Day, radio.de, Germany’s largest radio app and website, asked its listeners in four European countries how they – regardless of gender – want to surprise their sweetheart on Valentine’s Day. The good news first: only 5 percent of listeners chose the answer “This day means nothing to me”; the trend towards romance continues unbroken, at least among radio listeners. The biggest romantics were found in Spain, with only 3.7 percent showing no interest in Valentine’s Day, and the biggest romance philistines in Germany, with over 7 percent.
Among the remaining possible answers, the candlelight dinner fared worst with 28.2 percent approval, mainly because Spanish men and women do not seem to associate it with Valentine’s Day at all: only 14.4 percent of radio listeners between Murcia and Madrid opt for the romantic dinner. The figures in France are quite different – there, it is part of the lovers’ day for 43.2 percent. In direct comparison, the love song is clearly stronger: although only just under 30 percent of French participants count on the power of love songs, love songs perform strongly in the other countries and reach almost 40 percent approval overall, most clearly in Spain with 42.4 percent. And on the last option everyone agreed: 46.2 percent of participants across Europe chose the deliberately ambiguous answer “♥♥♥”, which simply means “love” … or maybe more.
